The underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women artists, non-binary and genderqueer artists in the Dutch art world is undeniable. Female students dominate the art schools, but the art world continues to be mostly male dominated. In this file you will find information about art and feminism from an intersectional perspective.

The situation that only men hold the important management positions in government functions, with funds and collections, at museums, stages and presentation institutions, at universities and art academies, is over. Unfortunately, that does not mean that gender no longer plays a role, because despite this structural improvement, sexism is so institutionalized that it constitutes a system that still determines our actions and thoughts. Female artists still earn much less than their male colleagues, their work is worth less, they receive fewer grants, exhibitions, presentations, etc. We want to investigate and contribute to finding solutions to the underlying, structural mechanisms of exclusion in the art world.

Also in this series: information on intersectionality, the complex interplay and overlap of axes of identity and projects that highlight these different, intersecting mechanisms of oppression and exclusion, and show how they work together. We strive to always question the binary categories of male and female.

In january 2020 we organized the conference The Roadmap to Equality In The Arts that dealt with the undeniable under- and misrepresentation of women artists, WOC, non-binary and genderqueer artists in the Dutch art world.

Een nieuwe generatie die beeld en taal inzet om feministische kwesties aan te snijden en voor wie de positie van de vrouw een belangrijk thema is in hun werk. Melkweg Expo biedt met trots een platform aan de hedendaagse feministische beweging in de kunst.

Ellen Schreven studeerde vorig jaar af als docent Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving bij ArtEZ. Zij was een van de zeven kunstenaars die met haar afstudeerwerk te zien was op de expositie.

De titel van Roxane Gay’s essaybundel is de inspiratie voor de expositie ‘Bad Feminist’ die vanaf 7 februari 2020 te zien was in de Melkweg, Amsterdam. Onderdeel van de expositie is het project Fe-mini-isme van Lotte van den Hoogen (www.instagram.com/fe.mini.isme/) waarmee zij in 2019 afstudeerde als docent Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving bij ArtEZ.

Diversity Stories, season 2, episode 3

In deze (Nederlandstalige) aflevering een reportage over de bijeenkomst Guess who’s coming to dinner too? op 3 april 2019 in De Kerk in Arnhem. Dit programma werd georganiseerd naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Your Voice Matters die tot 12 mei 2019 te zien was, met kunstwerken van twaalf kunstenaressen over de positie van vrouwen nu en in het verleden. Zij reageren in hun werk op vraagstukken zoals seksueel geweld, rollenpatronen, uitsluiting en migratie.
