Fear

A one-day event about Fear; about those anxious gut feelings that are resounding throughout the arts and society at large. In 2012, ArtEZ Studium Generale invited various guests to reflect on these stirring gut feelings.

Lezing Bas Haring: Kan een Stofzuiger Bang zijn?

Als er een trein op je afdendert voel je angst. Dat is een functionele angst omdat deze je ertoe brengt weg te rennen. Toch voelt deze angst niet slechts functioneel maar veel wezenlijker. Kunnen apparaten ervaringen hebben die net zo wezenlijk zijn als die van ons? ‘Alleen wie als de dood is voor de dood blijft over’.

Animation filmmaker Rosto in the workshop: The Attraction of the Horrible

Rosto, explains how, as a filmmaker, he focuses on the unknown but in a way that is not necessarily scary. Not everything is obvious in his work. Instead there is an additional, dark layer where mysteries occur and questions are raised.

Interview Frénk van der Linden with media artist Vicki Bennett

Through her innovative sampling, appropriating and cutting up of found footage and archives, British artist Vicki Bennett (1974) (stagename People Like Us) has been an influential figure in the field of audio-visual collage since 1991. Using collage as her main form of expression, she creates audiorecordings, films and radio shows that communicate a humorous, dark and often surreal view of life.

The way we fear and what we dread is mediated through social and cultural norms. This talk discusses the distinctive features of the European culture of fear at the present time. It explores the symbols and rituals through which modern fear is performed in everyday life.
