Carmen José
peopleCarmen José is a core tutor on the B.A. Illustration and Social Practice at Willem de Kooning Academy (WDKA) in Rotterdam. In 2021, she was elected to the Institution Works Council (IMR), which is a student and staff representative board authorised to give solicited or unsolicited advice to the management of the institute and to consult on all matters concerning the institute. The IMR provides critical feedback on proposals and curriculum strategies provided by the dean and the management team.
Carmen has focussed on bringing more inclusive and de-colonial content and strategies to the Illustration curriculum at the Willem de Kooning Academy and on addressing historical cultural biases specially within the field of illustration together with her Illustration Research group (Rachel Sender and Masha Krasnova-Shabaev). Carmen has developed a workshop for co-writing codes of conduct based on platforming collective expectations. It uses a simple set of instructions, which are being adopted and adapted by other classes within the illustration department at WDKA, and is influencing her work on the IMR.
