Ama Josephine Budge
peopleWriter, curator, artist and pleasure artist Ama Josephine Budge’s work navigates intimate explorations of race, art, ecology and feminism, working to activate movements that catalyse human rights, environmental evolutions and troublesomely queered identities. The sience-fictional and resistant practices of the artist can, Budge argues, reimagine the agencial capacity of queer Black bodies in relation to environmentally-changes futures in the face of what has been termed ‘climate colonialism’.
Ama has a background in performance art with a BA in Contemporary Performance Practice from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland then took a U-turn with an MA in Postcolonial Culture and Global Policy from Goldsmiths University working on a thesis exploring Queer Modes of Encounter with Climate Colonialism and Black speculative art practices, which went on to inform her PhD and interdisciplinary praxis.
Her work was originally planned to be shown at Other Futures Festival in Amsterdam (10/11/12 april, canceled for corona), a multidisciplinary festival of speculative fiction from all over the world with a focus on the relation between humans and non-humans and the question how to create multispecies communities.
Her installation work is currently being exhibited at Casco Art Institute in Utrecht, the Netherlands. She is the co-convener of The Art of Not Doing conference (Birkbeck, 2019), convenor of I/Mages of Tomorrow anti-conference (Goldsmiths, 2017), co-founder of The Batty Mama queer black club & performance night, and initiator of Self Love and Ecstasy pleasure collective (aka SLAE).
