Activism is about how artists and thinkers use their work to change the world. From activism against oppressive regimes, activism for a better climate or equal rights. How can you make a difference? In this topic you will find various contributions from artists and thinkers whose work attempts to reshape the world.

One-day event Revolte, blogs and video's

In 2017, ArtEZ Studium Generale invited during the one-day event Revolte, various guests to reflect on How to change the world? What do you change and how do you do that? Do you do that as an individual or can a revolution only be started by a large majority? Revolte is a one-day event about Activism; to explore the desire to change the world in a fundamental way.

Marjolijn van Heemstra gelooft in de transformerende kracht van theater. Dat je met een voorstelling iets in gang kunt zetten in de werkelijkheid, iets kunt oplossen. De vorm die ze daarvoor kiest, is een combinatie van theater en journalistiek. In haar toespraak vertelt ze over theatermaker Garry Davis die het wereldpaspoort uitvond vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en over haar vriendin die stateloos is. Hoe kan kunst helpen de mazen in de wet te vinden? Deze voordracht was onderdeel van Surfen&Duiken, een eendaags event dat in 2014 door Studium Generale werd georganiseerd.

TINKEBELL is het pseudoniem van Katinka Simonse (1979). Zij is een Kunstenaar, schrijver en activist die vooral bekend is om het verwerken van dieren in haar werken. In de loop van haar carrière werden haar kunstprojecten steeds sterker politiek en maatschappelijk geëngageerd. Onderzoeker Timotheus Vermeulen sprak met TINKEBELL. (1979) in 2014 tijdens het eendaags event Surfen&Duiken over haar kunst en de discussie over moraal en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen die ze daarmee wil prikkelen.

Nearly half of the world’s population lives on less than 2 dollars per day. More than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean water. Although there has been considerable progress made in the fight against poverty, there is still an enormous need for appropriate products and services for the Base of the Pyramid. Designer Alexandra presents alternative approaches to social innovation, sharing examples from Africa and Asia where taking a human-centered design approach to complex social and economic problems has helped overcome barriers that traditional development approaches were not able to do. The lecture took place during the one-day fextival Surfing&Diving organized by Studium Generale in 2014.

A conversation with writer, pleasure artist, curator Ama Josephine Budge, moderated by Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide, curator at the Van Abbemuseum. In the online lunchevent the work of Budge is is discussed. Her work navigates between intimate explorations of race, art, ecology and feminism, working to activate movements that catalyse human rights, environmental evolutions and troublesomely queered identities. The sience-fictional and resistant practices of the artist can, Budge argues, reimagine the agencial capacity of queer Black bodies in relation to environmentally-changes futures in the face of what has been termed ‘climate colonialism’.
