Workshop: An introduction to natural dyes, process, and color

In this two-day workshop, Helena will introduce us to a range of dyeing recipes and techniques with which we will create colours from mushrooms. Starting from these dye baths, we will explore the properties of these dyes through a variety of cellulose and silk fabrics.

On the second day of the workshop, we will be introduced to other pigments and colours, and learn to turn our colour baths into lake pigments and focus on the filtering techniques that are required for this process. Throughout this two-day workshop, we will reflect on our experiments and the questions that we have encountered while working with ‘natural dyes’. We will prompt our discussions by drawing on the histories, folklore, and politics of the textile industries and plant cultivation. Together we’ll explore the power of color from a decolonial and ecocritical perspective.

This workshop is specially developed for the artistic program ‘Matters of Life and Death’ of the AKI BIO MATTERs, headed by lecturer and coordinator Agnieszka Anna Wołodźko.

This programme is supported and organized together with ArtEZ Studium Generale.
