During this meeting, over a shared dinner, we will explore the research practice of diffraction and the scavenger methodology in relation with improvisation. The meeting is led by Kim Jäger, composing and improvising cellist. She is one of the lecturers participating in the project Praktijken van Onderzoek (Practices of Research) that is part of Doing (Artistic) Research Days 24/25.
Kim Kamilla Jäger is a composing and improvising cellist, a researcher, and teacher of Cello and Theory at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Arnhem. In her playing and research, Kim is often in conversation with jazz-adjacent traditions, and the intertwining of improvisation and composition. In her research practice, she explores different feminist/new materialist concepts, practices and methodologies.
Listening and serendipity as actors in improvisation - Conversation with Kim Jäger about her research practices
In this meeting, over a shared dinner, Kim Jäger will present the practice of diffraction and the scavenger methodology in relation with improvisation. The larger part of this meeting will consist of a shared dinner and a discussion between participants about the merits of engaging these practices and methodologies in research in music. To what extent is this possible in research at the conservatory? How are students researching with and through improvisation? What are differences and similarities between music and other art forms in this respect? Would students be interested? How could these concepts contribute to stronger connections with research in other art forms? How has research changed in the conservatory over the past few years? How can research at ArtEZ be more connected throughout different disciplines?
