Chaos & Conflict

"It’s too late to simply criticize the world. That criticism gives the audience the sensation of being on the right side of history, without any cost. (…) Art that is aware of its position, that doesn’t wallow in its own correctness, and challenges one to reinterpret the world is far more interesting."(Renzo Martens, NRC Handelsblad 2-10-2014, translation studium generale)
"I don’t own a television because I no longer want the misery of the world to enter my life." The flow of misery reaches us daily through the media and constantly occupies our thoughts. How do you deal with a world that is burning? Do you switch off your television? Or do you swing into action? What is your position and what does it mean to be an involved artist?
During Chaos & Conflict, together with experts, artists and scientists, we will research the true meaning of conflict and war. It is certainly not evident that we should all climb the barricades and speak out against war. If viewed from a biological perspective, isn’t war simply inherent to our society? And historically speaking war has also brought us something, as the driving force behind technological and economic advancement.
About the pros and cons of a chaotic and conflicting world. About the personal consequences for people in general and artists in particular. This day is about you!
