Creative Sonic Cartographies of ArtEZ (Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle)

An invitation to students to join a small creative project with Sharon Stewart

news
Sharon Stewart invites ArtEZ students to join her for a month-long, 2-3 hours per week, participation in a project to explore our embodied and aural relationship to ArtEZ. Focusing on listening, recording, and sharing text scores (written or spoken instructions for exploration).

Invitation to participate: Creative Sonic Cartographies of ArtEZ (Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle)

PROCESS:
You will commit to forming small groups (2-3 participants) who will choose and explore, through listening and collaborative and creative work, one theme regarding your aural relationship to ArtEZ. This might be (something like):

Listening for/Sounds of Belonging
Ignored Sounds and Abandoned Resonances
Sonic Attraction and Repulsion
Real and Virtual Sonic Worlds (within worlds)
Public and Private Soundworlds
Sound Surfaces and the Reverberation of Space
Listening for/Sounds of Hierarchies
Listening across boundaries for inspiration to learn

When? November 2024
Week one: basic grasp of human geography and sonic cartographies
Week two: choosing a theme and mapping out site(s) and mode(s) of exploration
Week three: exchanging a simple score and recording results in some way
Week four: synthesis through discussion (and editing, if you are interested)

Where?
Microsoft Teams meetings for introductory and follow-up meetings
Signal App to exchange scores and recordings.
On-site explorations at ArtEZ locations in Arnhem, Enschede and/or Zwolle
Exchanges and documentation through Google Forms

Through this process, you and I will come to understand something about the field of human(ist) geography (Yi-Fu Tuan was a central thinker), specifically focused on sonic explorations that highlight creative, relational interactions: sonic cartographies, soundmapping, soundwalking and field recording processes.

PLEASE NOTE: These investigations will be part of the final publication of the Professorship Theory in the Arts at ArtEZ. Your recordings, scores, and observations will become part of this publication, in compliance to your wishes and informed consent.

Interested?
Please send an email to Sharon s.stewart@artez.nl with a short description of your current studies and motivation for participating.
