Hiryczuk/ Van Oevelen

people
Elodie Hiryczuk (b. 1977, FR) and Sjoerd van Oevelen (b. 1974, NL) have been working as an artist duo since 2001. Both studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam) and respectively the Sandberg Institute (Amsterdam) and the AA Architectural Association (London).

Hiryczuk / Van Oevelen are interested in the workings of vision and systems of perspective, as well as humankind's relationship to nature and the landscape. In addition to their artistic work, they write and publish essays on their blog →The Detached Gaze and in magazines such as Philosophy of Photography(UK) and EXTRA – Fotografie in context (BE/NL).

Hiryczuk / Van Oevelen have had exhibitions at Looiersgracht 60 (Amsterdam), Bradwolff Projects (Amsterdam), DordtYart (Dordrecht), Museum de Paviljoens (Almere), Museum Van Bommel Van Dam (Venlo) and Kunstfort Vijfhuizen. They were represented at Unseen Amsterdam, Art Rotterdam, Contemporary Istanbul and FIAC Paris. They received a Red Dot Award and were nominated for the 13th annual Van Bommel Van Dam Prize. Their work is part of the collections of Kasteel Wijlre Estate, Van Den Ende Foundation, Erasmus MC Art Collection and AMC Art Collection.

Hiryczuk and Van Oevelen have been artists in residence at Arts Initiative Tokyo (Japan, 2015) and Skaftfell Center for Visual Art in Seydisfjördur (Iceland, 2009). They are founding members of the research-based art cooperative Radical Reversibility and are currently lecturers at Moving Image, AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art and Design (Enschede). Hiryczuk and Van Oevelen live and work in Amsterdam.
