Edwin Dertien

Edwin graduated from the University of Twente in 2005 with a MSc in Mechatronics. He continued his research, focussing on the design of a pipe inspection robot and obtained his Ph.D. in 2014. He has a fascination for robotics and has worked on several projects involving (autonomous) robots, both from an engineering and artistic interest.

Since 2006 his company ‘Kunst- en Techniekwerk’ (making art work) has been providing the technical backbone to art-projects, ranging from robot-arms for sci-fi movies to autonomous GPS track drawing robots,  to realising various autonomous art works, big moving sculptures and weird installations for festivals and expositions. In 2008 he started at the University of Twente as researcher / teacher for the Creative Technology programme, developing and teaching courses in programming, physical computing, sensor technology, tinkering and explorative design. In 2013 he co-founded the ASSortiMENS foundation, running a FabLab inspired workshop tailored to people with autism, including a children’s FabLab project (het kinderfablab). He is also a certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator.

Participant at MediaMatic’s SPINaward winning RFID hacker camps (2008 and 2009), regular contributor to GogBot Enschede (2007 – present), TEDx Amsterdam (2012), TEDx Zwolle (2013). Demo Chair at ACE conference (2013) and Co-organizer of MakerFaire Twente (2013).

Edwin Dertien gave a masterclass robot building on 6 November 2015, together with Dennis Reitsma.
