videoAlfred Quenum is a Vodun priest, a Kossalite. He followed years of Vodun training in the temple. Vodun is a West-African religion in which priests maintain contact with the orishas (natural forces) by consulting the oracle and carrying out ritual acts (sacrifices). In this philosophy, living in balance with the natural forces and the ancestors is of great importance to the well-being of individuals and the community.
Alfred’s story is part of the exhibition ‘Healing Power’ in the Afrika Museum at Berg en Dal (close to Nijmegen, until 22 April 2023). If you don’t feel good or feel comfortable in your own skin, then an obvious choice is to visit a doctor. Some people, however, turn to treatment methods that can be traced back to an ancient tradition in many cultures around the world. The exhibition provides insight into different forms of (spiritual) healing and shows the search for balance between the body, soul and mind.

Alfred Quenum is een Vodun priester, een Kossalite. Hij volgde jarenlang een opleiding in de tempel. Vodun is een West-Afrikaanse religie waarin priesters door middel van orakel raadpleging en rituele handelingen (offers) contact onderhouden met de orisha’s (natuurkrachten). In deze filosofie is het evenwicht met de natuurkrachten en voorouders van groot belang voor het welbevinden van individuen en de gemeenschap.
Alfreds verhaal is onderdeel van de tentoonstelling ‘Helende Kracht’ in het Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal (vlakbij Nijmegen, t/m 22 april 2023). Sommige mensen wenden zich voor het genezen van hun ziektes tot behandelmethodes die terug te voeren zijn op eeuwenoude tradities uit vele culturen wereldwijd. De tentoonstelling ‘Helende Kracht’ geeft inzicht in de verschillende vormen van (spirituele) healing en toont de zoektocht naar de balans tussen lichaam, ziel en geest.
