Nancy Jouwe

Nancy Jouwe is a teacher, researcher and speaker, active since 1993 in the NGO sector as a manager and cultural producer, with a focus on intersectionality, colonial history, art, heritage and intercultural dialogue. She was a co-founder of Framer Framed and was at the basis of the Mapping Slavery research project, a transnational research project that maps the Dutch colonial history of slavery.
Until 2013, Nancy Jouwe was program director at Kosmopolis Utrecht, a platform that fosters a dialogue between communities through art and culture, both nationally and in an international context. Jouwe was also director of the Papua Cultural Heritage Foundation in Utrecht. Jouwe co-published several books. Nancy Jouwe lectures at MA Fine Arts at HKU Faculty of Arts in Utrecht.

Nancy Jouwe (bio in het Nederlands)

Nancy Jouwe (1967) is een docent, onderzoeker en spreker, actief sinds 1993 in de NGO-sector als manager en cultureel producent, met een focus op intersectionaliteit, koloniale geschiedenis, kunst, erfgoed en interculturele dialoog. Ze was mede-oprichter van Framer Framed en stond aan de basis van het onderzoeksproject Mapping Slavery, een transnationaal onderzoeksproject dat de Nederlandse koloniale geschiedenis van de slavernij in kaart brengt. Als activiste was ze in de jaren ’80 en ’90 betrokken bij krakers- en verschillende emancipatiebewegingen. Ze komt uit een familie van politieke vluchtelingen die Indonesië in het begin van de jaren ’60 moest ontvluchten, omdat haar vader een politieke leider was in de Papoea-onafhankelijkheidsbeweging. Ze schreef uitgebreid over Papua-kwesties, waaronder vrouwenrechten en de Papoea-diaspora.
Tot 2013 was Nancy Jouwe programmadirecteur bij Kosmopolis Utrecht, een platform dat via kunst en cultuur een dialoog tussen gemeenschappen voedt, zowel nationaal als in een internationale context. Jouwe was ook directeur van Papua Cultural Heritage Foundation in Utrecht.

Jouwe co-publiceerde verschillende boeken, waaronder Papua’s? Oja, die bestaan echt, hè? Een inventarisatie van de positie van Papua-vrouwen in Nederland, 1958-1992 (met Marlise Mensink, 1993) en Caleidoscopische Visies. De zwarte, migranten- en vluchtelingenvrouwenbeweging in Nederland (met Maayke Botman en Prof. Gloria Wekker, 2000) en Paradijsvogels in de polder. Papoea’s in Nederland (KIT Publishers, 2012). In 2017 droeg ze bij aan de publicatie Dutch New York Histories: Connecting African, Native American and Slavery Heritage (met Dienke Hondius, Dineke Stam en Jennifer Tosch, LM Publishers / Washington University Press).
