Hoe zag jullie samenwerking eruit?

Aftertalk

A fruitful collaboration between the Master of Interior Architecture Corpo-real and Studium Generale

An exciting event on the relationship between power, space and the body took place in both ArtEZ buildings in Zwolle on Wednesday, 5th October. The event Extreme Slow Walk - Listening to the In-Between was a collaboration between ArtEZ's Interior Architecture Master's Corpo-real and ArtEZ Studium Generale. The cooperation and input lead to a stimulating and successful afternoon with about 100 students participating. We spoke to Mirjam Zegers of Studium Generale and Irene Müller of Corpo-Real to find out more about the successful collaboration.

How did the collaboration come about?

Mirjam: Studium Generale Zwolle works with an editorial board for the Kitchen Table Conversations series which consists of colleagues from different departments. Irene is part of that board and we sometimes found ourselves brainstorming about new plans and possible guest lecturers. When Studium Generale introduced the theme of Body and Power(lessness), she was eager to do something with the theme of voice, both the sounding voice and the voice in a political sense, for her students in the Master's in Interior Architecture. We discussed this topic further in a broader context, and brought on researcher Ed McKeon, who suggested to do an Extreme Slow Walk which is about awareness, attention and taking a clear place in the world, among other things: topics related to the theme of voice.

What did your collaboration look like?

Mirjam: After further conversations Irene and Roos (Krootjes ed.) asked if the masters students could also present their own research projects on that day. At first that seemed too much in one day. We were already facing the challenge to clearly delineate the chosen subject, but after a good discussion and coordination with colleague Eef Veldkamp, who in the meantime had become involved as producer of that day, it still seemed feasible. Everyone saw it as an experiment, and it worked well.

Irene: Then Mirjam spent a morning working with the students to prepare for their workshop. On that day there was plenty of exchange: about the research Spread Power by Space, about the theme Body and Power(lessness), about red threads, cross connections and practical matters. At the end of the meeting, we carved out the process and schedule for delivery of the necessary communication texts. It is nice how we always find possibilities together; even if it seems difficult, in the end it works out and something beautiful comes out of it that benefits the students.

What did the collaboration yield?

Mirjam: Interior Architecture students, Theatre Teacher students and other participants have been introduced to views and techniques in the workshops that complement their curriculum. And importantly, this event invited students to think about their own position in the world.

Irene: All participants were able to take a look in the kitchen of the master Corpo-real and the students of Corpo-real were able to present their research in a real context and as well as organize the workshop themselves. In doing so, they were able to use the knowledge and publicity channels of ArtEZ Studium Generale. By participating in the preparations themselves, they also gained insight into this. For all who attended, it was also a very pleasant networking event.

How do you look back on the event?

Mirjam: A successful afternoon with unexpected encounters. When you bring people together around a peculiar activity or an inspiring theme, sparks always jump somewhere.

Irene: It creates a bond when bachelor students can participate in the research of the masters of the same program. Bachelor students can get ideas for choosing their own direction and the exchange between disciplines can give unexpected perspectives. It was intensive and inspiring.

How might others approach such a collaboration? Do you have any tips?

Mirjam: A snowball effect works well: start small and then see how far the ball can grow without it getting too big.

Irene: A good start is a topic that students or teachers find interesting or important, but which does not yet have a place in the curriculum. Or just a part of the curriculum that deserves a bigger stage than just the immediate fellow students. It often starts with a good conversation about the content or a specific form. Even if you don't have an exact idea yet but would like to collaborate, you can always make an appointment with one of the curators of Studium Generale. They are happy to think along with you and are very cooperative.
