Deze lente begint de nieuwe leesgroep Pillow talk, die cirkelt om de vraag: Kunnen we ons een leesgroep voorstellen waarin we lezen benaderen als een radicaal intieme bezigheid? Het essay Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power van Audre Lorde zal ons op deze zoektocht begeleiden. Studium Generale organiseert de leesgroep samen met Jesse van Oosten, theoriedocent bij ArtEZ Arnhem (DBKV).

Pillow Talk

Pillow talk is een intiem gesprek dat gedijt op oxytocine en speelse humor. Het is een vreugdevol moment in bed waar informatie, bekentenissen en kleine weetjes worden uitgewisseld tussen hen die een kussen delen. In deze leesgroep vragen we ons af: hoe kunnen we op een intieme manier omgaan met theorie in kunsteducatie? Kunnen we ons een leesgroep voorstellen waarin we lezen benaderen als een radicaal intieme bezigheid, en waarbij we ruimte creëren voor het meer-dan-rationele om tot bloei te komen?

Voor elke leessessie nemen we Audre Lorde's essay Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power als uitgangspunt voor het beoefenen van verschillende intieme manieren van lezen, en voor het bespreken van onderwerpen als belichaamd leren, zintuiglijke betekenisgeving en de ethiek van relaties in de klas. In deze tekst herstelt Audre Lorde de erotiek als een creatieve levenskracht die onze diepste niet-rationele kennis voedt, terwijl ze het concept van de erotiek heroverweegt voorbij de westerse enge definitie ervan. We vragen ons af wat deze tekst uit 1978 oproept in de context van het kunstonderwijs vandaag de dag, en verkennen wat er gebeurt als we het samen lezen beschouwen als een fysieke bezigheid.

Hoe aandachtig te worden voor wat zich aandient?
Hoe kunnen we alle kennis die ontstaat koesteren?
Hoe kunnen we voorbij de taal lezen?

De leesgroep staat in eerst instantie open voor studenten en docenten met interesse in kunsteducatie. Idealiter kunnen deelnemers de meeste sessies bijwonen, maar het is geen probleem om je aan te melden als je niet alle sessies kunt bijwonen.

Door een gezamenlijke 'reparatieve lezing' van Audre Lorde’s essay Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power uit 1978 verkennen we wat deze tekst op dit moment voor ons kan betekenen. Herstellend lezen (zoals gebruikt door Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick in haar boek Touching Feeling) is een leespositie die vertrekt vanuit de liefde voor een tekst, vanuit plezier in plaats van een positie van kritiek of problematisering.

Leesvoorstel:
We lezen in keukentafelsetting met hapjes en drankjes binnen handbereik. Het maken en uitwisselen van notities leidt tot een correspondentie in de vorm van een ouderwetse kettingbrief.

Starting this spring, the new reading group Pillow talk revolves around the question: Can we imagine a reading group in which we approach reading as a radically intimate activity? Audre Lorde's essay Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power will guide us on this quest. Studium Generale organizes the reading group together with Jesse van Oosten, theory teacher at ArtEZ Arnhem (DBKV).

Pillow Talk

Pillow talk is the kind of intimate talk that thrives on oxytocin and playful humor. It is a joyful moment in bed where information, confessions and little tidbits are exchanged between those who share a pillow. This reading group asks the question: how to become intimate with theory in art education? Can we imagine a reading group where we approach reading as a radically intimate activity?

Each session, Audre Lorde’s essay Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power serves as a companion for practicing different ways of intimate reading, and for discussing topics such as embodied learning, sensorial meaning-making, and the ethics of relationships in the classroom. In this text, Audre Lorde recovers the erotic as a creative life force that nurtures our deepest nonrational knowledge, as she rethinks the concept of the erotic beyond the western narrow definition of it. We ask what this text from 1978 opens up in the context of contemporary art education today, and explore what emerges when we approach reading as an embodied practice.

What can a text move in us?
How to become attentive to what is opened up?
How to nurture all knowledges that arise?
How can we read beyond language?

Readers will be provided during or in time before each session.

Interested in participating? Please send an email with who you are and a very short motivation to J.vanOosten@artez.nl (please note, this is not for selection purposes, but just to gain some insight in who is participating upfront).

The reading group is open in the first place to students and teachers, with an interest in art education. Ideally, participants are able to attend most of the sessions, but it is no problem to apply when you are not able to attend all of them. The reading group welcomes both English and Dutch speaking participants.

Through a ‘reparative reading’ of Audre Lorde’s essay on the erotic, we will explore what this text from 1978 opens up in each of us and what it could mean in the context of our work or study today. Reparative reading (as deployed by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick in her book Touching Feeling) is a personal reading position that departs from the love for a text, from a position of the seeking of pleasure rather than from a position of critique or problematization.

Reading proposition:
Snacks and drinks are being served while we read and make notes. We will exchange notes, to let a correspondence evolve that takes the form of an old-fashioned chain letter.
