Hidden stories – a storytelling method

De Indiaas-Nederlands theatermaker en storyteller Abhishek Thapar maakt beeldende en intieme voorstellingen op de grens tussen documentaire en fictie. Hij combineert persoonlijke verhalen met grote wereldwijde thema’s. Hij strijkt in Arnhem neer voor zijn nieuwste project Lacuna Kitchen, dat in première gaat bij Theater a/d Rijn in april 2025. Het is geen gewoon restaurant, noch een traditionele theaterproductie, noch een community-project, maar een samensmelting, waarbij de keuken transformeert tot décor voor verandering. Lacuna Kitchen creëert een ruimte waarin de verhalen van anderen - met name die van keukenmedewerkers met een migratieachtergrond - worden gedeeld. Door middel van gedeelde ervaringen van voedsel en verhalen, wil Abhishek Thapar culturele en emotionele bruggen bouwen en een diepgaand begrip en heling bevorderen. Tijdens de onderzoeksperiode kan het publiek aanschuiven bij een aantal Kitchen Telling Events.

Kitchen Telling Event
Eten verbindt! En samen eten bereiden ook. Het Kitchen Telling Event is een terugkerende gemeenschapsmaaltijd waarbij publiek samenkomt om met elkaar te eten, elkaar beter leert kennen, te spelen, te praten en een gevoel van gemeenschap te laten groeien. Door theater en gastronomie te combineren, wordt interculturele dialoog toegankelijk gemaakt.

Social theatre maker Abhishek Thapar focuses the lens on invisible kitchen workers within the hospitality industry. Lacuna Kitchen is a community-arts project, bringing together theatre, gastronomy, community building and social activism in a long-term research and performance that touches both the intellect and the heart. A Kitchen Telling Event by Abhishek Thapar is organised once a month.

Indian-Dutch theatre maker and storyteller Abhishek Thapar creates visual and intimate performances on the borderline between documentary and fiction. He combines personal stories with big global themes. He is settling down in Arnhem for his latest project Lacuna Kitchen, which will premiere at Theater a/d Rijn in April 2025. It is neither an ordinary restaurant, nor a traditional theatre production, nor a community project, but a fusion, in which the kitchen transforms into a décor for change. Lacuna Kitchen creates a space in which the stories of others - especially those of kitchen workers from migrant backgrounds - are shared. Through shared experiences of food and stories, Abhishek Thapar aims to build cultural and emotional bridges and promote deep understanding and healing. During the research period, the public can join a number of Kitchen Telling Events.

Kitchen Telling Event

Food connects! And so does preparing food together. The Kitchen Telling Event is a recurring community meal where audiences come together to eat with each other, get to know each other better, play, talk and grow a sense of community. By combining theater and gastronomy, intercultural dialogue is made accessible.
