Kapwani Kiwanga (artist/filmmaker/anthropologist)

Reflect with BAFTA nominated artist and filmmaker Kapwani Kiwanga on the power of representation, and the politics of representation in contemporary art history, and history more widely. You bring an existing portrait or self portrait to the workshop to discuss, taken from a magazine, art, pop culture, literature etc. During the workshop each participant will again be asked to create a portrait of one of their co-workshop participants as well as a self-portrait. Kapwani is interested in the knowledge and beliefs of histories that have, as she says, ‘fallen through the cracks.’ ‘I’m not at all pretending to be a seasoned academic,’ says Kiwanga. ‘But I’m always trying to look at multiplicities, or multiple tellings of the same story.’
