Henry Alles – Change and Place
Research October and November in Enschede
Presentation 9 November 2017 in Enschede
From his self-built cottage, Henry explores the ArtEZ space. In collaboration with students and incidental passers-by, he creates an opera-like performance, involving a cottage, an orchestra and an opinion. This way you join together to give a voice to the users of the space .
Change and Place, as my research is named is probably not only about learning to make the art we want, but also about where we are making it.
Our being here has a strong influence on landscape
There is not a different place somewhere else, where we have to strive to end up at to make what we want to make.
We are where we should be
This is where we produce new knowledge
And here it is where we can use the commons as a tool to create a new relationship with the public space.
If we would create what the market wants us to create, we will soon be old fashioned.
We need the fashion department to lead us
We need the dance department to lead us
We need the housekeepers to lead us
We need the cooks to lead us
This is how we want to learn
The non-governmental public sphere itself here is a common, which is very important because it is with this common that people can act out shared ownership and democracy.
Our current situation is a full with gaps that we understand but do not bridge
We should bridge them and discover gaps that are a common challenge
Those hidden gaps, those are the ones we want to Uncover.
